Program(s) affected: T1 Document created: 04 08, 2009
Tax year(s): 2008 Document last modified:

I have a case where the program does not split any amount in Quebec (Schedule Q), even though the taxpayer has pension income (T4RIF/RL-2) that is eligible for splitting, is that correct?

That depends, the program will not perform the split if the following conditions are met:

    a) The taxpayer was less than 65 years of age on December 31, 2008
    b) The taxpayer has pension income that is eligible for splitting
    c) portion or the whole of a RRIF's taxable amount shown in box 16 of the T4RIF/RL-2 has been transferred in a RRSP or a RRIF. This amount exceeds the amount of pension income eligible for splitting.

When these conditions are met, the program enters an erroneous amount on line 36 of Schedule Q, which prevents the calculation of the eligible amount for income splitting. Please note that in the cases where the amount for b) is higher than the amount for c), Schedule Q will be generated. However, the calculation will still be erroneous because the amount on line 36 is incorrect.

As a workaround, go in the file of the spouse who meets the abovementioned conditions, enter the keyword Override , select the option "Quebec Schedule Q line 36", and then enter 0 in the $ field. Calculate the return and consult Schedule Q, verify the amounts and, if needed, override your amount with a different amount, should you require to report an amount other than 0 on line 36 (in some rare cases).
